"Uefa should look at introducing a group stage for next season because it feels like a huge missed opportunity at the moment" I absolutely disagree with this. The tendency towards group stages rather than pure knockout competitions is driven by a need to placate commercial interests, rather than sporting ones. Business dislikes the unpredictability of sport.

I'm not wholely convinced by Leclerc...Whenever I see him defer to Vettel, I wonder whether Max Verstappen would do the same.. For me, there is something rather too conciliatory about a young driver submitting to team orders, both early in the season, and early in their career.

One can only applaud this new modern 'science', where tortuous mathematics is employed to support a pre-written conclusion.. Life expectancy has never been higher (to the extent we have a pensions crisis), and years of emissions regulations mean that air quality is better than ever, but hey, won't somebody please think of the children.... @Rockyrex: The motoring public would prefer vehicles that actually can make return journeys, and don't require mini power stations to be installed in their homes.

Ferrari have a history of throwing drivers away.... The cars are coloured red in the blood of the drivers they didn't care about. Ascari, Villenueve, Bandini ... Ascari is particularly instructive, it speaks to the ethos of the team, that hasn't changed these long years.

I wish car manufacturers would simply update the mechanicals, and leave the styling alone. The original Range Rover was a good looking vehicle, this isn't (an unsuccessful blend of rugged and implied speed). It would also guard against the tendency for cars to get ever bigger.. Also, why do we need the CO2 figures? a) they are implicit in the fuel consumption stats (burn one molecule of petrol, you get eight atoms of carbon) and b) no-one buys a car like this to signal their environmental virtue. Tell us what the road tax rates are instead . Finally, can we get rid of the '4x4 drivers are t****' type comment that infects btl all car reviews, but especially more expensive ones. It's tired, clichéd, and reflects more on the tediousness of the commentator than the intended target.

Will Elon Musk's 120-hour week stop us worshipping workaholism? | Technology | The Guardian

technology | August 23, 2018
Many talked of Elon Musk as if he was the new Messiah, saving us from environmental apocalypse, so much so, that he started believing it himself, even to the extent of life saving miracles. The reality is, he can't deliver his mainstream model 3 in anywhere like sufficient numbers, he's driving his employees too hard, and having to sell his cars at a loss. It doesn't help that he does stupid tricks like calling his driving aids 'autopilot', a name that implies a great deal more infallibility than is actually the case.

The only hope of a good race is if it rains. If it doesn't then Ferrari can be relied upon to spoil the show with a choreographed finish.

Cricket is one of those sports that doesn't need segregating by gender. There is a small amount of athleticsim involved, but it is mostly technique. If I could change cricket at all, I'd allow batsmen to go out bare headed. It is a legitimate way of intimidating fast bowlers. In my youth, in Venture Scouts, I remember facing a female fast bowler. I swear, she was employing fast leg theory...It has informed my misogyny, years later ;-)
Halo does not look good but its worth to F1 was made clear at Belgian GP | Giles Richards | Sport | The Guardian
😒 Not Good
sports | August 27, 2018
Hopefully it is the fuel and not the engine that is responsible for the Ferrari power advantage. If its the engine, then that's it, it is all over. As for the halo, never really liked it, it changed the profile of the car. It's now questionable whether it is still open cockpit. It's a philosophical question- if we ever achieved absolute safety, would we still feel the same way about the profession of racing driver, once the element of courage has been removed from the attributes required for success? Some ascribe the more aggressive and less sporting style of racing by (ironically) Senna and Schumacher as a response to improved safety, the fear of hurting a competitor had gone.
